Three days across Varanasi’s ghats, temples, parks and Banaras food
You’ll begin at Manikarnika Ghat and continue through the old-city atmosphere around the Ganges. Assi Ghat Varanasi brings a slower riverside morning, while Ramnagar Fort Varanasi adds a quieter change of scene. Shri Satyanarayan Tulsi Manas Mandir, Varanasi and Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, Varanasi keep the final day focused on temples and reflection.
Good to Know
Estimated total per person: ₹11,050-24,000
Weather: In September, expect warm humid days, occasional heavy showers and muddy or slippery stretches near the river.
Pack:
quick-dry clothes
compact umbrella or rain jacket
sandals with secure grip
small crossbody bag
electrolyte sachets and a refillable water bottle
Local tips:
Use app cabs or agree on an auto-rickshaw fare before starting, especially for the fort crossing.
Do not photograph cremation activity at Manikarnika Ghat and follow temple security instructions without argument.
Booking tips:
Choose accommodation with easy auto or app-cab access rather than deep inside narrow lanes.
Keep at least one flexible indoor or cafe break because monsoon showers can disrupt riverside timing.
Getting there (from India (major metros)):
flight: IndiGo, Air India and Akasa Air from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru or Hyderabad - 1.5-2.5 hours nonstop, excluding airport time - ₹5,000-12,000 per person return
train: Vande Bharat Express, Rajdhani Express and Shiv Ganga Express - 8-14 hours from Delhi; longer from Mumbai or Bengaluru - ₹2,000-6,000 per person return
For major metros, compare a direct flight with a train from Delhi; booking around 3-6 weeks ahead usually gives the best balance of fare and timing.
Ganga Aarti at Dasaswamedh Ghat happens every evening at 6:30-7pm (exact timing varies). Arrive by 6pm for a spot with a clear view; boats (₹500-800/hr) give the best perspective.
Auto-rickshaws and tempos cannot enter the old city lanes (ghats area) - walk from Dashashwamedh Road or take a narrow-lane cycle-rickshaw (₹50-80).
The ghats are active 24/7 but the burning ghat (Manikarnika) is always lit. Photography is strictly prohibited there and guards will confiscate phones - be respectful.
Benares Hindu University (BHU) is a separate half-day visit worth doing - the New Vishwanath Temple inside has no photography restriction and is less crowded than the original.
Day 1: Old City and Riverfront Edges
Experience the spiritual atmosphere of Manikarnika Ghat before visiting Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Pause for lunch at Kashi Chat Bhandar and savor the day’s distinctive flavors. Few days capture Varanasi better than this one.
Manikarnika Ghat (late morning): Slot in Manikarnika Ghat, a well-loved hindu temple (4.6★), between the day's bigger stops.
Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple (): Visit the sacred Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, a 20-minute walk from Assi Ghat. Experience the spiritual vibes and intricate architecture. Ensure to dress modestly and be prepared for security checks. Entry is free, but donations are appreciated.
Eat: Kashi Chat Bhandar - Order tamatar chaat and kachori-style snacks for a quick, strongly local meal.
Evening: Spend the evening reflecting on the powerful impressions of Manikarnika Ghat and Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple over a relaxed meal at Kashi Chat Bhandar.
Budget for the day: ₹1,750-3,600 per person
Day 2: Fort, Park and Riverside Calm
This is the most varied day: a fort setting, open green space and a gentler riverside stretch. Start early so the heat and traffic do not dominate the experience.
Ramnagar Fort Varanasi (morning): Take an auto-rickshaw or app cab from central Varanasi, allowing roughly 35-50 minutes and ₹250-500 one way depending on traffic. Walk through the fort’s courtyards and museum rooms, paying attention to the old collections and the quieter river-facing atmosphere. The sandstone surfaces feel warm by late morning, so arrive early and carry water. Keep extra time for the return journey because bridge traffic can slow sharply after the morning.
Sant Ravidas Smarak Park (late afternoon): Reach Sant Ravidas Smarak Park by app cab or auto-rickshaw in about 25-40 minutes from the fort, usually ₹200-400 when shared. Walk through the open grounds at a relaxed pace and use the broad spaces for photographs and a break from dense lanes. The park is more enjoyable when the light softens and the air cools. Wear comfortable footwear, as you may spend much of the visit walking rather than sitting.
Assi Ghat Varanasi (evening): Witness the morning rituals and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. It's a 15-minute ride from the city center by auto-rickshaw, costing around ₹50-100. Don't miss the morning aarti and a chance to meditate by the river.
Eat: Baati Chokha Restaurant - Choose baati chokha with seasonal sides for a filling, traditional dinner after the longer day.
Evening: Wind down with dinner at Baati Chokha Restaurant.
Budget for the day: ₹2,300-4,400 per person
Day 3: Temples and a Quieter Finish
Keep the final day devotional and unhurried, with three nearby stops rather than trying to cover every temple in one morning. This is exactly the kind of day Varanasi is known for.
Shri Satyanarayan Tulsi Manas Mandir, Varanasi (morning): Take an auto-rickshaw or app cab from your accommodation, generally 20-35 minutes and ₹150-300. Spend time reading the inscriptions and noticing the cool white marble interiors before walking through the landscaped areas. Morning is the most comfortable period for the visit, especially in September. Dress modestly and keep your voice low; the temple’s appeal comes from its calm atmosphere rather than a long checklist of rituals.
Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, Varanasi (late morning): Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple is a beloved sanctuary devoted to Lord Hanuman, known for its devotional energy and welcoming atmosphere. Visitors can admire the brightly decorated shrine, listen to prayers and bells, and experience the fragrance of flowers and incense. The temple’s peaceful courtyard encourages moments of faith, reflection, and quiet connection.
Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, BHU Campus, Varanasi (afternoon): Reach the temple by auto-rickshaw or app cab in around 15-25 minutes, usually ₹120-250. Take time to observe the spacious campus setting and the temple’s tall structure, which feels markedly less compressed than the old-city lanes. Avoid carrying large bags and check the day’s access arrangements locally before leaving. The white-and-ochre surfaces are especially clear in the softer afternoon light after a shower.
Eat: Sagar Ratna - Pure Veg Restaurant BHU Lanka - It is a convenient vegetarian choice near the campus area, with familiar South Indian dishes for a lighter midday meal.
Evening: Wind down with lunch at Sagar Ratna - Pure Veg Restaurant BHU Lanka.
