Local tips:

Getting there (from India (major metros)):
flight: Flights to Chandigarh, followed by a pre-booked taxi - Approximately 4-6 hours total from Delhi; longer from other metros - ₹5,000-12,000 per person return, excluding taxi
train: Shatabdi Express to Kalka, then Kalka-Shimla Railway - Approximately 7-10 hours from Delhi, depending on connections - ₹2,000-5,000 per person return
road: HRTC Volvo or private taxi from Delhi - Approximately 8-10 hours one way - ₹2,000-5,500 per person return
For most metro travelers, reach Chandigarh or Kalka and continue by road; reserve the Kalka-Shimla Railway separately because its small-capacity services fill quickly.
Chandigarh is the real gateway to Shimla - fly to Chandigarh (IXC, well-connected) then take AC Volvo bus (3.5 hrs, ₹350) or cab (₹1,800) to Shimla. Far more reliable than Shimla Airport.
Toy train (Kalka - Shimla Heritage Railway, UNESCO) takes 5 hours and is the romantic choice. Book first-class chair car (₹250) on IRCTC for window views - but slower than road.
Mall Road is pedestrian-only after 9am. Leave your vehicle at the Sanjauli or Victory Tunnel parking (₹50/hr) - taxis are banned from the ridge.
Kufri (15km) and Chail (45km) are half-day trips; avoid weekends when Shimla - Kufri road becomes gridlock with Delhi families.
Day 1: First Walk Along The Ridge
Begin with the graceful setting of Christ Church, Shimla, then continue to the peaceful Tara Devi Temple for a day of gentle discovery. The contrasting character of these two places makes the walk feel both reflective and memorable.
Christ Church, Shimla (afternoon): Reach Christ Church, Shimla by taxi to the central drop-off, then walk about 5-10 minutes; a short local taxi ride usually costs ₹100-200 per vehicle. Spend time noticing the pale neo-Gothic exterior, tall arched windows, and the quieter interior away from the shopping crowds. Shree Hanuman Temple, Jakhu, Shimla (morning): Take a taxi uphill from central Shimla in about 15-25 minutes for ₹250-450 per vehicle, depending on traffic and waiting time. At Shree Hanuman Temple, Jakhu, Shimla, allow time for the elevated views, temple bells, and the large Hanuman figure that dominates the hillside. Kali Bari Temple, Shimla (): Conclude your Shimla trip with a visit to Kali Bari Temple. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali and is known for its beautiful architecture. The evening aarti is a must-see for a spiritual experience. It's easily accessible by cab from the cultural complex.

Gorton Castle (afternoon): Continue by taxi from Viceregal Lodge towards Gorton Castle in roughly 15-20 minutes, budgeting ₹250-400 per vehicle. From outside, study the building’s stone façade, timber details, and steep mountain-setting profile; the architecture gives this stop a different mood from the open spaces around The Ridge. Keep the visit observational and brief if access is limited. The surrounding roads can be busy, so use a safe pull-over point rather than stopping in traffic.
Shimla Railway Station (late afternoon): Reach Shimla Railway Station from Gorton Castle by taxi in about 10-15 minutes for ₹150-300 per vehicle. Look at the station’s hillside setting and colonial-era railway character, then take a calm final walk around the approach before your return transfer. The platform atmosphere is most enjoyable when a train is arriving, with cool metal, engine sounds, and mountain air mixing together.
