Three days of Coorg peaks, plantation trails, waterfalls and monastery calm
You will start with Mandalpatti Peak and Kote Betta, where cool cloud and forest air make the first day active. Coorg Pappy's Coffee Plantation Island gives day two a slower plantation rhythm with coffee aromas and quiet views.
Good to Know
Estimated total per person: ₹20,300-41,800
Weather: In September, expect humid days, intermittent rain and cooler hill evenings, with slippery trails around Mallalli Waterfalls and Irpu Waterfalls - Brahmagiri.
Pack:
grip-soled walking shoes
light rain jacket or poncho
quick-dry trousers and spare socks
small daypack with water
power bank and insect repellent
Local tips:
Keep a flexible buffer after every hill drive; rain can make short distances take much longer.
Carry small cash notes because forest and plantation areas may have unreliable card or mobile connectivity.
Booking tips:
Reserve Nagarahole Tiger Reserve safari slots before finalising the day-three taxi plan.
Ask your accommodation to arrange a local 4WD for Mandalpatti Peak instead of taking a standard sedan on the rough final road.
Getting there (from India (major metros)):
flight: Flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Chennai to Kempegowda International Airport, followed by taxi - About 6-9 hours total, depending on connection - ₹7,000-18,000 per person return
train: Train to Mysuru, then taxi or bus to Coorg - About 10-14 hours from Bengaluru; longer from other metros - ₹2,000-6,000 per person return
road: KSRTC bus or self-drive from Bengaluru - About 6-7 hours one way - ₹2,000-7,000 per person return
For a short trip, fly to Bengaluru and reserve a round-trip taxi rather than losing time changing between airport transfers, Mysuru and Coorg.
Bangalore to Coorg by road (4.5-5 hrs): take NH75 via Hassan - faster and more scenic than the NH275 Mysore route. Weekend traffic jams can add 2 hrs; leave by 6am.
Coorg coffee estates open for tours year-round. Most require advance booking - Tata Coffee Estate (Pollibetta) and Club Mahindra Madikeri offer organized visits.
Rainfall in Coorg is intense June - August. Dubare elephant camp and Iruppu Falls are closed or unsafe during peak monsoon. October - March is the dry sweet spot.
Talacauvery (Kaveri river source) is 60km from Madikeri - a half-day trip. The road to Brahmagiri Peak is narrow and fog-covered at sunrise, which is the whole point.
Day 1: Cloud Roads and Forest Peaks
Keep the first day outdoors and active, but do not try to squeeze in every viewpoint. Start early for Mandalpatti Peak, then choose Kote Betta only if your legs and weather cooperate. Few days capture Coorg better than this one.
Mandalpatti Peak (morning): Take a pre-arranged local 4WD from Madikeri, roughly 45-60 minutes each way, costing about ₹1,500-2,500 per vehicle when shared. At Mandalpatti Peak, walk the short exposed sections slowly and watch clouds roll across the ridgelines; the grass can be wet and slippery after rain. Carry water and a light layer because wind arrives quickly. Start before 8am for clearer views, and agree on a pickup time with the driver rather than assuming vehicles will wait.
Kote Betta (afternoon): Reach Kote Betta by taxi from Madikeri in about 60-75 minutes, with a shared round-trip cost near ₹1,200-1,800 per person. This is the day’s proper forested hike, so use shoes with grip and allow time for the guided route rather than rushing to the top. Expect damp earth, leeches after rain and dramatic breaks in the trees. A local guide is worth arranging beforehand, especially if the trail is cloudy or recently wet.
Mallalli Waterfalls (late afternoon): Drive from Kote Betta toward Mallalli Waterfalls in about 90 minutes by taxi, with the longer day’s shared transport usually costing ₹1,500-2,000 per person. Walk down only as far as conditions feel comfortable; the steps and rocks become slick after rain, and the return climb is more tiring than it looks. The sound of falling water carries through the valley, while the lower viewpoint gives the best sense of scale without requiring a risky approach.
Evening: Return early if rain builds; this is not the day to add late nightlife after two hikes and a waterfall descent.
Budget for the day: ₹4,200-7,600 per person
Day 2: Coffee, Water and Unhurried Hours
Savor the lush atmosphere of Coorg Pappy's Coffee Plantation Island before exploring the historic character of Madikeri Fort. Pause for lunch at Raintree Restaurants, then let the day unfold at an unhurried pace between coffee, greenery, and heritage.
Coorg Pappy's Coffee Plantation Island (morning): Take a taxi from Madikeri for roughly 45-60 minutes; a shared round trip generally works out to ₹700-1,200 per person. Walk through the plantation at an easy pace, noticing the darker green coffee rows, damp leaf litter and changing shade under the trees. Ask about the harvest cycle and allow time for a fresh cup rather than treating this as a quick photo stop. Wear closed shoes because plantation paths can stay muddy even when town roads are dry.
Madikeri Fort (): Madikeri Fort offers a glimpse into Coorg’s layered history through its sturdy walls, colonial-era architecture, old cannons, and elegant palace buildings. Wander through the fort complex to admire stonework, leafy courtyards, and quiet viewpoints, while learning about the rulers and changing eras that shaped the region. It is a rewarding stop for history enthusiasts and photographers.
Eat: Raintree Restaurants - Choose a rice-based local meal and keep lunch moderate before the plantation walk.
Evening: Enjoy a relaxed evening reflecting on the coffee-filled calm of Coorg Pappy's Coffee Plantation Island and the storied walls of Madikeri Fort.
Budget for the day: ₹3,300-6,200 per person
Day 3: Wildlife, Waterfall and Golden Quiet
Start before sunrise because Nagarahole Tiger Reserve is the time-sensitive part of the day. Finish with the calmer Namdroling Monastery Golden Temple, keeping clothing modest and the pace respectful. A quintessential Coorg experience.
Nagarahole Tiger Reserve (morning): Leave Madikeri around 4:30-5am by taxi for the forest approach, taking roughly 2.5-3 hours and costing about ₹1,500-2,500 per person when shared. Join the booked safari slot and keep voices low while scanning the road edges for movement rather than expecting constant animal sightings. The forest is coolest before sunrise, with damp air and bird calls around the vehicle. Carry a packed breakfast, water and a light jacket; do not rely on finding food during the safari window.
Irpu Waterfalls - Brahmagiri (afternoon): From the Nagarahole side, continue by taxi for about 60-90 minutes, budgeting ₹600-1,000 per person for shared local transport. Walk along the forested approach to Irpu Waterfalls - Brahmagiri and stop well before slippery rocks near the natural pool if rain is falling. The spray cools the path and the water sounds louder under the tree cover. Keep footwear dry where possible and allow enough time for the uphill return before driving onward.
Namdroling Monastery Golden Temple (late afternoon): Reach Namdroling Monastery Golden Temple by taxi in approximately 60-75 minutes from Irpu Waterfalls - Brahmagiri, with the day’s shared transport usually costing ₹1,000-1,500 per person. Walk quietly through the prayer hall and courtyard, observing the large painted figures and the softer echo inside. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, remove footwear where required and avoid flash photography. Late afternoon is gentler than midday, though the monastery can still feel busy on weekends.
Evening: Keep the final evening quiet after the early forest start; buy only compact coffee or spice packs if you still have luggage space.
Budget for the day: ₹5,800-10,000 per person
