Winter is the one season where India's travel calendar and Asia's weather agree. From November to February the whole belt Indians fly to, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Maldives, the Gulf, sits in its dry season at once. Clear mornings, no afternoon downpour, sea calm enough to actually swim in.
The catch is that everyone knows this, and the school holidays land right in the middle of it.
So here is how I would think about it: pick the country on what you want the trip to feel like, then pick the week on what you are willing to pay. Those are two separate decisions and most people collapse them into one.
Sri Lanka: The Most Trip for the Least Money
If you have not been in the last few years, go. It is a ninety-minute flight from Chennai, the ETA has been free since May 2026, and in December the west and south coasts are dry while the rest of the island is not. Base yourself between Galle and Mirissa, and you get surf beaches, colonial fort streets, and whale watching off Mirissa, all inside a two-hour drive.
Food is the underrated part. A rice and curry lunch, which is six or seven small dishes and unlimited rice, costs ₹250-400 and will beat most restaurant meals you eat in Southeast Asia at three times the price.

Vietnam: Go South in Winter, Not North
This is the one people get wrong. Vietnam runs in weather bands, and in December the north is cold, grey and drizzly. Ha Long Bay in January is genuinely disappointing, all mist and no light, which is not what you flew for.
Go south instead. Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc are warm and dry from December through April. Hoi An sits in between and is at its best from February.
Vietnam is also the cheapest country on this list once you land, around ₹3,500-5,000 a day for a proper mid-range trip. A week comes to ₹35,000-55,000. Thailand: Peak Season, and It Earns It
November to February is Thailand's cool dry season and it is the best the country gets. Bangkok in December is genuinely pleasant to walk around, which is not true in April. The Andaman side, Krabi and Phuket, has its calm clear water now.
It is busy and priced accordingly, but entry costs you nothing: Thailand is still visa-free for Indians, now 30 days rather than 60 since 15 September 2026. Most travel sites still report this wrong, so we wrote up exactly what changed.
A week runs ₹40,000-65,000. The 3-day Bangkok itinerary is ₹23,250-46,450 and the Phuket one ₹31,600-60,800, so the classic city-plus-beach split fits inside a week comfortably.
Malaysia: The Value Pick Nobody Suggests
Malaysia is visa-free for Indians for 30 days under an exemption running to 31 December 2026, and it costs about half what Singapore does for a similar mix of city, food and beach. Kuala Lumpur, then Penang for the food, then Langkawi if you want sand.
One honest caveat: the east coast, Perhentian and Tioman, is in its monsoon from November to February and largely shut. Stay on the west side and you are fine.

The Maldives: Peak Season, Still Doable
November to April is the dry season and December is the busiest month of it. The trick has not changed: stay on local guesthouse islands like Maafushi or Thulusdhoo rather than resort islands, and you pay ₹2,000-4,000 a night instead of ₹25,000 and up, for the same reef.

Dubai: Closest, Easiest, Most Expensive
Winter is the only time of year Dubai is comfortable outdoors, which is why the whole city moves outside from November. Desert nights, beach clubs, and the Global Village season.
Check the visa before you plan around it. Indians need a UAE tourist visa arranged in advance unless you hold a valid US, Schengen, EU or Australian visa. UK visas stopped qualifying for visa on arrival in 2026, which catches out people who did it easily two years ago.

Bali: Wrong Season, Popular Anyway
Bali is the one place on every December list that should not be. December and January are its wet season. You get afternoon downpours and pay peak airfare for the privilege, because Indian demand does not care what Indonesian weather is doing.

The One Thing That Costs You Real Money
Not the country. The week.
A Bangkok return that costs about ₹25,000 in early December costs roughly ₹46,000 if you fly out on 27 December. Same aircraft, same seat, ₹21,000 more. For a family of four that is ₹85,000, which is an entire second holiday.
It is the same story everywhere: Sri Lanka goes from about ₹16,000 to ₹30,000, the Maldives from ₹32,000 to ₹60,000, Bali from ₹37,000 to ₹69,000. Anything departing between 20 December and 4 January carries it, because school holidays, wedding season and New Year all land together.
Three ways out, in order of how much they save you:
- Fly a week earlier. Leaving 14 to 19 December instead of 22 to 28 gets you the same weather for roughly a quarter to a third less. This is the single best move available to most people.
- Book by the end of October. If your dates genuinely cannot move off New Year, booking now rather than in December is worth ₹10,000-20,000 a head on most of these routes.
- Take Diwali instead. The 7 to 11 November cluster needs one or two leaves, the weather is already good across Southeast Asia, and fares have not started climbing.

Month by Month
November is the quiet winner. Dry season has started nearly everywhere, fares are still at normal levels, and the Diwali cluster gives you a long weekend for one or two leaves. If your dates are flexible, this is the month.
December splits in two. The first fortnight is normal. From about the 20th it becomes the most expensive travel window of the Indian year.
January is excellent and underrated. Once the first week is out of the way, fares drop back and the weather across Thailand, Vietnam and Sri Lanka is at its best. Late January is arguably the sweet spot of the entire winter.
February holds the good weather and adds Hoi An and central Vietnam, which are poor in December. It is also the cheapest month of the year to fly to Bangkok.

If You Want One Recommendation
Sri Lanka in late January, flying from a southern city. It is the cheapest trip on this list, the weather is at its best, the visa is free, and you are past the pricing spike. If you want more of a holiday and less of a journey, Thailand in the first two weeks of December does the same job for about ₹15,000 more.
