Winter is the easy season to plan and the expensive one to book. Everywhere Indians fly for a beach in December is in its dry season at the same time, which is lovely, and which is also why everyone is going.
So the useful advice this time of year is not a list of nice places. You already know Thailand is nice in December. The useful advice is about dates, because on these routes the calendar is worth more than the destination.
The Single Most Expensive Fortnight of the Indian Year
School holidays, wedding season and New Year all land on top of each other between roughly 20 December and 4 January. Across India to Southeast Asia and India to the Gulf, fares in that window run 60 to 140 per cent above the same route priced in early November.
Two levers actually move that number.
Lever one: book before 31 October. For departures in the 20 December to 4 January window, seats booked on or before 31 October typically sit 40 to 80 per cent below what the same seat costs once December starts. That deadline is about eight weeks away as this is published. If you already know you are travelling at New Year, the booking is the urgent part, not the itinerary.
Lever two: move your dates by one week. Departing 14 to 19 December instead of 22 to 28 December saves 25 to 40 per cent, and the weather in Bangkok, Colombo, Da Nang or Malé is identical. Early December, the first fortnight, is softer again.

Where the Money Actually Goes Furthest
Sri Lanka is the strongest value in the region right now and it is not close. Thailand is at its genuine best from November to February, which is why it is also at its most expensive. The saving grace is that it is still visa-free for Indians, now 30 days rather than 60 since 15 September 2026, so entry costs you nothing. The Long Weekends You Can Still Use
Two breaks left in 2026 worth planning around:
- Diwali cluster, 7 to 11 November. One or two leaves. Fares are still below the December spike and the weather is already good everywhere on the list above. This is the underrated window.
- Year-end, 25 December to 1 January. Four leaves buys you ten days. It is also the most expensive week of the year, which is the trade.
If you want the ten days without the peak pricing, take the leaves and fly out on 14 or 15 December instead. You come back before the fortnight everyone else is paying for.

What to Actually Do This Week
If you are travelling at New Year, book the flight now and work out the itinerary later. The 31 October deadline is the whole game, and every week you wait after it costs real money.
If your dates are flexible, look at 14 to 19 December first, then early December, then Diwali. All three give you the same weather for meaningfully less.
